Alvin (Al) A. DeShano was born June 1st, 1934 in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. He and his sister, Patricia, were raised by their mother, Martha, and their maternal grandfather. After graduating from Mt. Clemens High School, Al joined the Marine Corps. His boot camp training was at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California: he then was stationed at El Toro Marine Base before being sent to Korea during the war.

After his service in the Marines, he returned to California to stay. He got a job with Allstate Insurance, starting as a mail clerk. There, he met his future wife, Paula. They married on May 7th, 1960. Nine months and three days later, their first child, Ken, was born. Four more children followed in the next seven years; Kathy, Dan, Bob, and Steve.

Following employments with Allstate Insurance, Enviro Foods and Uncle John’s Restaurants, he began his accounting career with Carl Karcher Enterprises. He worked for Carl’s for thirty years as Director of Accounting before retiring at the age of 67.

His leisure time before and after retirement was spent in many ways. His time spent with family was first and foremost. Anytime he was surrounded by family, he was at his happiest. He loved sports of all kinds; in his younger years, he bowled and played tennis and softball. Later, he developed a passion for golf. He also loved roller coasters - no one had a bigger grin!  He loved museums, air shows, lighthouses, and trains, was an avid reader and a collector of coins and stamps. He also volunteered for the Orange Police Department.

Al loved to travel. He and Paula traveled all over the United States and Canada; Hawaii, Alaska and New England being favorites. Some of his happier times were spent in Elgin, AZ with his sister and her family.

Although he was not one to show emotion, he was forever changed when his grandchildren were born. Aubrey, Michael, Mikaella, Tyler, Paige, and Kylee were the joys of his life.

His quiet demeanor and gentle spirit balanced out the rest of us.  He will be greatly missed but we find comfort in knowing he is playing a round of golf on the grandest of greens.
