August 1, 1926 ~ December 31, 2016 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Alexander Francis Pesqueira

                                        8/1/1926 – 12/31/2016

Alexander Francis Pesqueira was born on August 1, 1926 an only child to Alexander and Amelia (Cabrera) Pesqueira at St. Mary’s Hospital in Boyle Heights, California. Al passed away on December 31, 2016 at the age of 90.

At the age of 6 years old Al had his first job as a magazine salesman.  At the age of 8 Al built his own shoe shine box and shined shoes in Boyle Heights.  Al attended St. Mary’s Catholic Elementary School.  He was active in school sports and was an altar server for the Masses held at St. Mary’s.

Al attended Cathedral High School until the age of 16 when he was offered a football scholarship at the University San Francisco.  Al attended one year at USF when World War II broke-out.  Al entered the Navy at the age of 17 and served from 1943 to 1945 in the Pacific Theatre and earned the rank of BMS 3 when he left the Navy in 1945.  He would tell war stories of his time in the Navy.  The one that stands out the most is when Admiral Nimitz’s ship was refueling off of Al’s ship.  Al was standing on the forward deck supervising the re-fueling process when Admiral Nimitz yelled over at Al and told him to “square away your hat sailor.”  Al’s hat was too far on the back of his head!!!

After Al left the Navy in 1945 and returned to the University of San Francisco.  Upon his return to California the Los Angeles Rams sent a letter asking him to try out for the team.  Al made the decision that he would rather continue his education than possibly get broken bones playing football.  Al graduated from USF with a degree in accounting.

In 1945 Al married Candaleria Saiz.  From this union came 3 children, Alexander, Paul and Stephanie (Poff)

The Pesqueira family moved to Norwalk California whereupon Al accepted an accounting position with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles.  Al’s first assignment was overseeing the finances the Diocesan Cemetery Department.  Al continued working for the Catholic Church in Los Angeles until 1976 when the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange was created.  Al was the first Chief Financial Officer for the Diocese of Orange until his retirement in 1982.

Al enjoyed playing golf, playing cribbage and gin rummy and traveling.  His favorite place to travel to was the island of Maui.

Al will be missed by his family and friends.  His love of laughter, music and being with his family were his greatest joys.
