In Memory of Robert Joseph McCloskey
Obituary
Robert Joseph McCloskey, 92, of Anaheim, California, died peacefully at home on July 27, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 7, 1930, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the eldest son of Mary and Joseph McCloskey. He grew up in Philadelphia and was a lightweight boxer in his youth. He graduated from LaSalle High School and LaSalle College. He was the first person in his family to complete college, earning his degree while working. He went to the graduate school of Finance at the University of Arizona.
He served in the US Army from October 1952 to August 1954 and fought as a combat soldier in the Korean War. He was awarded five medals: the Korean Service Medal with one bronze star, the combat infantry badge, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. After his honorable discharge, he returned home to marry the love of his life, Jeanne Quinn, whom he met at work. They were married on September 11, 1954, at the Church of the Transfiguration in Philadelphia. Shortly thereafter, they headed to Arizona and then to Southern California, which became their new home. They shared a love story for the ages and were happily married for more than 69 years.
Robert was involved in his children’s lives, especially as an avid football and baseball fan, in their sports activities, coaching their little league softball and football teams for many years. On vacations, he shared his appreciation for the outdoors by introducing them to fishing and the varied landscapes of the San Bernadino Mountains.
Robert showed kindness to everyone he met. He was a long-time Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Society member and a volunteer at Saint Justin Martyr Catholic Church.
Robert is survived by his cherished wife, Jeanne, his five children and their spouses: Jean McCloskey, Steven McCloskey (Heidi), Diann McCloskey, Michael McCloskey, Andrew McCloskey (Shanna); and seven grandchildren: Sarah Faridi, Douglas Taylor, Ashley McCloskey, Michael Foster, Quinn Foster, Miriam McCloskey, and Jenna McCloskey.
