Robert Joseph Evans passed away January 5, 2022, at the age of 92 in Talent, Oregon after a brief illness. He was born July 5, 1929, to Josephine Keniston Evans and Bernard Joseph Evans in Oil City, Pennsylvania. His mother referred to him as her “little firecracker.” Bob joined the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He attended the University of Pittsburgh where he earned a Master’s Degree in Education.
Relocating to California he was hired by the Garden Grove Unified School District. During his career of thirty-two years, he taught Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, Math and Shakespeare. He was the first school Planetarium Director in Southern California extending his program into the community and other schools.
Bob was a lifetime Ham Radio Operator. He was an avid seismologist and author of papers on tectonic deformation in California. In his spare time, he repaired T.V.s and was an electrician and block captain. He liked to fish when he could find a lake.
After retiring, he devoted himself to maintenance at Saint Anne School in Santa Ana, donating endless hours every week for decades. He described himself as a man of faith. He never complained and commented, “I am ok so far.”
Bob’s defining quality was a lifetime curiosity for learning and a promotion of that in others. He was a positive force for good and a true Renaissance Man. He will be missed by the many students, both adults and children, he influenced.
