Obie Lee Powell, 79, of Santa Ana, CA, passed away on November 24, 2023. He was born on May 6, 1944, in Lumpkin, GA. Obie was a proud man with a strong work ethic and deep commitment to family values. He was known for his wisdom and willingness to share his thoughts and views with others. Obie enjoyed family gatherings and had a passion for music, especially smooth jazz.
Obie is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Ann, and their children: George (Georgia), James (Nina) Robby, and Mia. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Alyssa, Jared, Malik, Marshall, Jonah, Taro, Marcus, Moey, Nicholas, Brianna, and great-grandchildren Maleigha Powell and Malcolm Stubbs. Additionally, Obie is survived by his aunt Rosa McCaskill of Los Angeles, cousin Willie (Barbara) Weaver of Buffalo NY a host of cousins in New Jersey, Detroit, Los Angeles and Rochester. Sister and brother in-laws as well as a host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Ford, and mother, Lula Mae Ford.
Obie accepted Christ and was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Lumpkin, GA at the age of 13. His faith was an integral part of his life, providing him with guidance and strength.
Obie served in the U.S. Navy for 6 years, demonstrating his dedication and commitment to his country. After his military service, he pursued a career in accounting, working for the county of Orange for many years before joining the United States Postal Service, from which he retired in 2003. Obie's dedication to his work and professionalism made a lasting impact on those he worked with.
A memorial service and viewing will be held at Brown Mortuary in Santa Ana, California, on Saturday, December 9, 2023. The viewing will take place from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., followed by the services at 11:00 a.m.
Burial and internment will be Monday, December 11, 2023 at 10:45 a.m. at Riverside National Cemetery
