Mike Capuano was self-proclaimed Mr. Fix-it. Any problem that crossed his path was met with diligence and perseverance until a resolution was found. He was quick to action when a problem needed solving, be that car trouble, a computer virus, or a school assignment. He loved hosting gatherings with loved ones. At family parties, you could always find Mike with a camcorder over his shoulder or a karaoke microphone in his hand.
Mike showed steadfast dedication in all aspects of his life. He was lovingly dedicated to his family, friends, and career. He worked hard to provide for his family, and proudly celebrated the achievements of those he loved. He demonstrated unwavering loyalty to his sports teams. Even through the progression of his neurocognitive disorder, he could tell you the score of the Angel game and provide commentary on their performance. He was a fierce fan of music, and even when he couldn’t recall the name of a band he could still sing every word of his favorite songs. He tended to his garden every day. He took meticulous care to ward squirrels away from his avocado tree, ensured his hummingbirds were always fed, and protected his caterpillars through their maturation into monarch butterflies. Mike’s favorite getaway was to Balboa Island, where he loved to hop in the captain’s chair of a Duffy boat and chauffeur his family around the bay.
Mike fought a long battle against Primary Progressive Aphasia, and was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2022. He joined UCI’s research on neurological disorders because the world dealt him something he could not fix and he refused to accept that. He dedicated himself to science in the hopes that a fix for PPA can be found one day. In loving memory of Mike, below is a link to donate to UCI’s research on neurological disorders.
