Mary Ellen Teter, of Tustin, California, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her own home on December 11th, 2023. She spent her final days surrounded by her close family and friends who loved her dearly.
Mary Ellen was born on August 20th, 1936 in St. John, North Dakota to Gordon and Frances Sliter. She grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota with her older brother Bob, whom she adored and idolized. After graduating from nursing school, she moved from Minnesota to Los Angeles, California, where she began her nursing career. She would also meet her first husband there, Sam Costanza, with whom she would have four sons. She put her nursing career on pause and began raising her boys in Tustin.
In 1975 Sam passed away from cancer. Mary Ellen, true to her nature and upbringing, mustered her strengths and went back to work as a surgical nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital. She worked hard to ensure that she and her young sons could stay in the neighborhood they loved, and that life for them remained stable.
Eventually, a fellow nurse set Mary Ellen up on a blind date with a close friend with four children of his own, Gary Teter. They hit it off immediately and got married in 1977. They have been together ever since.
Mary Ellen absolutely loved the holidays, especially Christmas. She loved to meticulously decorate the family home for these special occasions, and create fantastic meals for the extended family and friends to enjoy. She loved to shop and prepare and entertain and cook and dine and give out presents and stay up way too late and then do it all over again the next day. She loved her grandchildren, and loved spoiling them. Her and Gary's home is a shrine to family, with every inch of open wall and table space displaying beautifully framed photos of all the generations throughout the decades.
Mary Ellen is predeceased by her brother Robert Sliter, granddaughter Molly Teter, and daughter-in-law Angela Turner-Teter. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Gary; her sons David (Sonya), Todd (Leslie), Kevin (Michele), and Brian (Shelly); her stepchildren Tonja (Mike), Scott (Angie), Tim (Carrie), and Angela (Joe); her grandchildren Ryan, Katie, Shane, Kyle, Cella, Ben, Lucia, Melina,Oskar, Leo, and Clementine; her great grandson Blake; and of course the thousands of hummingbirds that she has kept well-fed for as long as we all can remember.
