Mary Louise Nelis was born in Philadelphia to Thomas and Katharine Nelis, who raised Mary and her brother John in a traditional Irish Catholic fashion instilling values that sustained her throughout her life. Thoughtful, analytical, spiritual, humorous, thrifty, stubborn and strong are many of the characteristics she inherited from her parents.
Mary married Frank Ferry and moved to Corona del Mar and later Santa Ana to raise a family. Mary was widowed at a young age and raised five children, working at a variety of jobs to keep her family together. After retiring from Santa Ana College, where she made lifelong friends, Mary moved to Rancho Santa Margarita where she made many new friends and was a fixture in that community walking her guide dog puppies around the lake.
Mary was a member of numerous organizations throughout her life including Parents without Partners, the Sierra Club and the Marin Guide Dogs for the Blind as a puppy trainer. She was an adventurous woman and loved the outdoors having had numerous river rafting, backpacking, fly-fishing and cross-county skiing trips over the course of her life. Mary also loved gardening, reading, music, dancing and travel. Mary is survived by her children Maureen, Michael, Tom (deceased), Kelly and Susan, twelve grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
A special thank you to the staff of Guardian Angels Homes where she lived for her last two years. Services for Mary will be held on Monday, June 28, 12:00 p.m. at Holy Family Church in Orange. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to her granddaughter’s organization, the 2nd Street Hooligans Animal Rescue, or if you prefer, plant a new tree or flower in your garden in her memory.
Mom is on a new adventure now with the loved ones who have proceeded her. That is our hope and faith
