Marie Thérèse Assaf (née Khoury) age 91, of Pasadena, California passed away peacefully at her home on May 18, 2021. She was surrounded by her family. Born June 18, 1929, in Alexandria, Egypt, she immigrated to the United States with her husband Emile in 1957. She is the daughter of Kahlil F. Khoury and Victoria C. Khoury (née Doumar).
During the first 20 years of their marriage, Marie and Emile moved from state to state with each of his promotions. When they immigrated in 1957, they moved to Port Huron, Michigan where Marie had their first child in 1958. In 1959 they found themselves in Glendale, California where the next three children were born over three successive years. In 1962 they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where the last two children were born in successive years (and Emile’s newly immigrated mother joined the family). In 1964 the family of 9 moved to Denver, Colorado, then in 1968 Marie and family moved to La Crescenta, California. In 1970, due to Marie’s new job they moved to Pasadena, California. In 1974 the family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana for two years, returning to Pasadena, CA in 1976 where Marie and Emile have lived for the past 45 years. Beginning in 1984 Marie and Emile spent a few years commuting between their home in Pasadena and Stamford, Connecticut (where he was working).
Marie earned a B.A. from St. Mary of the Woods College in Indiana in 1977 and she earned an M.A. in French from U.C. Santa Barbara in 1980. Marie always knew that she wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a teacher. As a young woman of 17 she started substitute teaching for him at the Swiss elementary school. In 1966 “Madame'' started teaching French at Graland Country Day School in Denver. In 1969 she became a French teacher at Polytechnic School in Pasadena, where she taught for 30 years (interrupted by two years in Indiana and one year teaching at the Westridge School). Marie was very proud to be part of the Poly faculty. She became lifelong friends with many of the remarkable people that she worked with as well as many of her wonderful students. Although Marie never really had any spare time, as she was always busy raising and loving her children and grandchildren, she and Emile loved to travel and listen to opera and classical music. Marie and Emile were members of the Founders Circle at the Music Center and the LA Opera. Marie and Emile were devout Catholics and regular parishioners at SS. Felicitas and Perpetua in San Marino. Marie was a Eucharistic Minister for many years. She loved her parish and her parish friends.
She is survived by her three sisters; Gabrielle Saba of Montreal, Canada, Antoinette Mishirky of San Francisco, California, and Marguerite Gellad of Falls Church, Virginia; her six children, Jeff and Cecelia Assaf of Brentwood, California, Michele Assaf of Pasadena, California, Greg and Zenaida Assaf of Santa Ana, California, Kim and David Koehler of Coto de Caza, California, Robin and Don Wofford of Carlsbad, California, and Karen Torrell of Pasadena, California; her eleven grandchildren, Brody Torrell, Darian Torrell, Drew Koehler, Shelby and Rick Maxwell, Brooke Koehler, Madison Koehler, Ariana Assaf, Paulina Assaf, Morgan Wofford, Julio and Elise Assaf, Amanda Assaf; her great grandson Rex Assaf; and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. Marie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to so many.
