LeRoy Hammond

LeRoy Hammond, 88, born March 25, 1935 in New York City, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2024 at his son’s home in Texas. LeRoy spent his childhood in New York City as the only child of Josefa and Alton Hammond.

LeRoy and his father moved to California following the unexpected death of his mother in 1948. He graduated from Beaumont High School in 1952 where he excelled in the marching band and played the violin.

LeRoy joined the U.S. Coast Guard and met his wife of 62 years, Petra Burgos, when stationed in Puerto Rico. During his time in the Coast Guard, LeRoy had a keen interest in electronics and graduated with an Advanced Technology degree from the RCA Institute in 1958. LeRoy was seriously injured while serving in the Philippines resulting in his medical retirement from the Coast Guard. With hard work and the help of therapists, he was able to overcome the limitations of his disability. The family settled in California and became permanent residents of Orange County in 1960. LeRoy helped Petra raise their five children in Huntington Beach. He studied computer programming at Chapman College where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1978. 

LeRoy enjoyed spending quality time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, who will forever remember his courage, unconditional love, and guidance.

LeRoy is now joyfully reunited with his wife, Petra Hammond, son LeRoy Hammond Jr., son-in-law Mike Clark, and parents Josefa Diaz and Alton Hammond. He is survived by his children, Frank (Elfi), Robert (Colleen), Sherry Hammond Clark, and Linda (Mark) Brown; his 13 grandchildren: Shirley Hammond, Aiden Hammond, Jason (Theresa) Hammond, Alexander (Sylvia Sanchez) Hammond, Melissa (Aisali Faapouli II) Hammond, Kevin (Jessica) Hammond, Michael Brown, Lindsay Brown, Brian(Myrthe) Hammond, Emilee Brown, Corey (Anna) Hammond, Andrew Hammond, and Gerran Brown; his 3 step-grandsons: Richard, Brad, and Jason Clark; and his 6 great grandchildren: Carmen, Aisali III, Tyler, Elijah, Stella, and Charlotte, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
