Herman “Papa Herm” Flores always arrived early, whether it was a movie, flight or sport. True to
form, he left us early for his final journey. He is loved and will be missed.
Herman was born in Orange County to migrant farm workers, Elisa and Jesus “Jesse” Flores, the
second of five children. He attended Santa Ana Valley High School, where he played football and
made life-long friends. There he met Susan (“Sue” Goens), who became the love of his life. Together
they had two sons, David (Hannah) and Eden (decd. 1/11) and adopted a third, Daniel. Herm coached
the boys in sports, and was immensely proud and supportive of his sons. He made sure he was present
for every concert, skate board event, or football game. He also was fond of the boys’ friends, and
even as grown-ups it was common for a friend to call him for advice or stop by the house.
Herm was a hard worker, and generous. While he took classes in drafting and architecture, his true
calling was carpentry, which he did his entire life. Shortly after marrying Sue, he bought a lot
down the street from his mother, and designed and built a beautiful home for his family. While it
was always a work in progress, 40 years later it is a home with open doors, where friends gather to
share a meal, discussion, or play a game of cards. Herm also devoted many, many hours to helping
family, friends and acquaintances with projects big or small, and could always be counted on for
those in need of help.
Herm had a big heart. He loved his three grandchildren unconditionally, and could be found on the
floor playing with them or going on whatever adventure they chose during their visits. He loved
watching Reed play hockey, and would fly or drive to support him in tournaments across the
northwest. His granddaughter, Sierra, was the apple of his eye, and the youngest, Zeke, could make
him laugh like no other. He also found joy in his god-daughters, Lauren and Lisa, and loved their
children like his own grandchildren. He also loved his dogs and grand-dogs, especially his darling
Catalina.
It would take days to relay a complete story of what an amazing life he had. While we are sad that
he has left, we hope his legacy of showing up and finding humor lives on in all of us.
*His son, Eden Douglas Flores, will be interred beside him.
