Father Patrick B. Philbin, SM (Marianist), was born in Akron, OH, on July 10, 1933, to the late John and Margaret (Bevens) Philbin who were Irish immigrants. He was the sixth of seven children (3 brothers and 3 sisters). He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Fr. Patrick attended St. Vincent Grammar School and St. Vincent High School (now St. Vincent-St. Mary High). He professed first vows as a Marianist on December 28, 1952. He earned a BS from the University of Dayton in 1955 and professed final vows on August 15, 1956. Fr. Patrick earned three master’s degrees: in French from Case-Western Reserve, in theology from Notre Dame and in counseling from Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. He was ordained a priest in the Society of Mary on November 25, 1972.
Fr. Pat was a teacher and a chaplain. He served at several Marianist schools throughout the US. Most recently, Father Patrick served at several parishes and at the House of Prayer in Orange, CA. For two decades, he also spent six months each year teaching seminarians and assisting the needy in Vietnam. He died on July 25, 2022, in Orange, CA.
A vigil will be held on Friday, August 5 at San Antonio de Padua del Cañon Church, located at 5800 E. Santa Ana Canyon Rd., Anaheim, CA. A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 6, at San Antonio de Padua at 12 p.m. Rite of Committal will take place immediately following the Mass at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, 7845 E.
