Elmer (Smitty) Smith was born in Hamlin Plantation, Maine to Artheline and Herbert Smith. He grew up on his parent’s farm, along with his sisters Joanne, Mildred, Betty, and Irene and his brother, Tom. After returning home from serving in the Army in Korea, he moved across the country to California where he met the love of his life, Doris. It was love at first sight for Smitty and four months after meeting, they were married. They were happily married for 53 years, until Doris passed away. He was proud of his work as a union carpenter for 32 years, passing his knowledge on to his sons.
At his core, Smitty was a devoted family man. He and Doris taught their six children the value of hard work, the priority of their Catholic faith, the importance of looking out for their community, and the grace of unconditional love. Smitty is survived by his children Mary, Theresa, Kevin, Tina, Gary, and Rachel; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. All will miss his quiet, witty demeanor.
