Mary Subia
April 18, 1926 – June 15, 2018
It is with great sadness that the family of Maria “Mary” Perfecta Gutierrez Subia announces her passing, and also with great gratitude that she will be joining her beloved in heaven. Mary was born on April 18, 1926 in El Paso, Texas, the third of four daughters born to Francisco and Juana Gutierrez. She was raised in El Paso, where she met the love of her life, Roberto “Bob” Subia, whose family lived next door. The two shared a very special connection, were inseparable as children, and were married for 63 years. They were a match made in heaven, were in love their entire lives, and are now together again. Bob, a WWII veteran, preceded her in death on August 7, 2014. Mary is also preceded in death by her sisters Ignacia “Nacha” Subia (Carlos) and Pomposa “Ponca” Rivera (Angel). She is survived by her children Elena Subia Melchert (Christopher), Alicia Subia Stipek (Peter), Mario Subia, and Olga Subia Guilfoyle (Mike) as well as her 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, sister Clemencia Duarte, and several nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Bob and Mary raised their family in Oceanside, Santa Ana, and Fountain Valley, where Mary had a great career with the US Postal Service. She liked to travel, often visiting family in El Paso, but truly enjoyed traveling with her children and grandchildren, coast to coast and parts in between. Together, Bob and Mary accumulated a wonderful collection of experiences and memories. She was very smart, bold and courageous, kind to those in need, quick to smile, quick to argue, had a strong personality, and was loved by so, so many. She will be greatly missed.
