George “Don” Lodin passed away on April 9, 2019, with family at his side. He is survived by his loving wife, Angela, wonderful sons and their wives, John, Michael (Laura), James, Robert (Michele), and William (Laura); and beloved grandchildren Anders, Julian, and Hannah. Don was born in Rockford, Illinois, on October 12, 1933, to George Stanley Lodin and Lenore McGrath Lodin. After earning a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering at M.I.T., he served in the United States Air Force where he flew F-86 Sabre jets. His subsequent career in aerospace engineering brought him to Southern California. Don and Angela met in Albuquerque when she found Don exploring his parents’ attic, and they married in 1963. Don’s interests revolved around family, classical music, technology, steam engines, woodworking, travel around the U.S. and England, exploring museums, historic Civil War battlefields, and Colorado gold mines.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday April 26 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Newport Beach. Interment will be at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that a donation be considered to Mary’s Kitchen or St. Michael’s Abbey.
